How do I get someones IP when they are chatting on MSN/yahoo

How many times have you moderators on computer security message boards heard this one? The answer is quite simple really. All you need is a direct connection from you to the person's computer, and a wonderful little command that comes with all windows systems called netstat. Netstat displays active connections and protocol statistics.

Now to get someone's IP on these messenger you would need a direct connection. I will explain why in a bit. Now to get a direct connection you would need to have some sort of file transferring, voice chat session, or even a web cam session with Windows NetMeeting.

Ok say you are sending a file to someone and you want to get his or her IP. First you would need to open up the MS-Dos Prompt or Command Prompt or the little black window thingy to the computer illiterate. Just follow the same format I showed you early on how to find your IP address. You know, Start, Programs, Command Prompt. Ok now you should have the Dos Prompt window up. While you are transferring/receiving a file, or voice chatting with someone, type in the command netstat -n. You should see something like this

C:\WINDOWS>netstat -n
Active Connections
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State

TCP 211.124.228.98:1138 64.4.13.69:1863 ESTABLISHED
TCP 211.124.228.98:1150 64.4.12.190:1863 ESTABLISHED
TCP 211.124.228.98:6891 12.90.50.93:1978 ESTABLISHED

The above is an example I got from using the netstat -n command on a friend. The two above commands are from the MSN messenger service. There are two because I am chatting to two people at this time. So while I was transferring a file to this person I did the netstat -n command and got their IP number (12.90.50.93).

How to format a USB Flash Drive with NTFS file system?

Normally we format out USB Flash Drives with FAT / FAT 32 Files systems. In Fact, Windows XP can format your USB Pen Drive in NTFS, just you have to make some changes to make it work. I am posting here a simple tutorial which will guide you through the entire procedure.Enabling NTFS on flash drives might have several benefits which is listed below.

Why should I Format USB Drive with NTFS File System :
It allows the use of file compression to stretch the capacity of your disk. You can use NTFS to allow and deny permissions for individual files and folders in XP, which you can’t do with FAT.

Follow the simple steps :

1.Right click My Computer and select Manage.

2.Click on the Device Manager at the left side window

3.Now click on Disk Drives, select your USB Pen Drive, Right Click on it and select Properties.

4.Choose Policies tab and select the “Optimize for performance” option & Click OK.

5.Now go to My Computer, Right Click on the USB Pen Drive and select Format Option.

6.You will see the NTFS option in the dropdown box, so just select NTFS in the File System dropdown box.
7.That’s it. You are done.

Boot And Run Windows Xp From A Pen Drive

There are times when a minor error in the Windows Registry or a Virus Infection, can make your system unbootable. In such a condition a properly configured USB drive on hand with Bart Lagerweij's free utility (BartPE), is a handy replacement for windows operating system.

BartPE will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS file systemsupport.

Don't confuse BartPE with Microsoft's Official Windows PE. BartPE has got some interesting features as compared to Windows PE and it's a freeware.
Requirements To Install BartPE :
  • USB Flash drive with at least 256 MB of storage capacity.
  • The files from your Windows Installation CD-Rom.
How It Works :

  • PE Builder, condenses the original setup data for Windows XP into a slender operating system that is ready to run from or a USB flash drive.
  • This compact, portable version of Windows includes all the important system tools for dealing with a PC emergency.
  • You can even add other programs to this collection, such as the media writing tool Nero Burning ROM or an anti-spyware package such as Ad-Aware SE Personal, during the installation process.

Steps Involved :

  • Download the latest PE Builder version (self-installing package) and install it.
  • Start PE Builder (pebuilder.exe) and insert Microsoft Windows XP installation/setup CD, it will condense the setup files into your pen drive.
  • At the main PE Builder dialog, select the "Pen Drive" option. Hit the "build" button. PE Builder will now ask you to create a BartPE directory, answer with "yes".
  • PE Builder will now start building BartPE. This will take a few minutes. You will see a lot of files getting copied and/or decompressed, into your pen drive. If the data verify was correct and there where no errors reported you can boot the Pen Drive.
If you have any problems or questions about PE Builder just post a comment here or look in the links below.

AUTORUN.INF virus. Is it in my system? How to check?

Start ->Run->(Type)Command
Type CD\ in drive C to go the root directory
Type DIR /AH and press ENTER key.
This will show all hidden files in drive C.
If you could see "AUTORUN.INF file" and "Recycled folder", then your computer is infected.

How to check it's in my USB?
Try the same steps to your USB drive and check if your USB stick contains the Recycled folder and AUTORUN.INF file. If it does then your USB is really infected.

YOUTUBE BANNED VIRUS

"Youtube is banned you fool, The administrators didn't write this program guess who did??", I get this message, whenever I tried to enter youtube.com.

You are getting this message and prevented from entering into www.youtube.com, because of a "USB Worm". The worm spreads through USB devices like pen drive. So be careful when you use USB devices in public places like internet cafes.

You can find this worm inside a folder called Heap41a
By removing this folder you can remove the USB Worm and start using Firefox again.

But this is a hidden folder in C drive. So you can't see it.
So follow the steps to enter into the folder and remove the worm.

Delete C:\Heap41a folder.
Steps to Delete C:\Heap41a folder and remove USB Worm.

•Open Windows Explorer
Type C:\Heap41a ( in address bar ) and press enter.
( To unhide the hidden folder Heap41a).
•Click and download AutoHotkey.INI (a file to remove the worm) to Heap41a folder.
•Go to Heap41a folder.
•Double click a file called svchost.exe to execute.
•A message box will appear. Press Ok
•Go to C: dirve (using My Computer or thru Windows Explorer)
•Delete C:\Heap41a folder.

How to Remove AUTORUN.INF virus manually?

Boot your system in Safe Mode Command Prompt.
To confirm the Autorun.inf infection

•Type CD \ - This takes you to the root directory of drive C
•Type DIR /AH - To Display all hidden.

If you find a file: AUTORUN.INF, it confirms the infection of the virus.
If you find a folder :RECYCLED, it also confirms the infection.

Using simple DOS commands we can easily remove Autorun.inf Virus (It spreads thru USB devices like, pen drives)

To remove the infection.
•ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\AUTORUN.INF - unhides the hidden file autorun.inf
•DEL C:\AUTORUN.INF
•Repeat these steps to other drives also.

Install Windows XP on Your Pre-Installed Windows Vista Computer

The question I am asked most often is "How do I install a dual-boot with Windows XP on my new Windows Vista computer?" The answer is that it's not that difficult, it's just very time consuming, and you need to own a copy of Windows XP.

Note that you should not attempt this if you aren't ready to troubleshoot any problems that might occur.

The first issue we encounter is that computers with pre-installed operating systems take up the entire drive. Luckily Microsoft included the Shrink volume feature in Vista, so we can easily shrink the Vista partition down to make room for XP.

Open the Computer Management panel, which you can find under Administrative tools or by right-clicking the Computer item in the start menu and choosing Manage. Find the Disk Management item in the list and select that.

Now we'll shrink our volume down by right-clicking on the main hard drive and choosing Shrink Volume.

Now you can choose the size that you want to shrink, which really means you are choosing the size that you want your XP partition to be. Whatever you do, don't just use the default. I chose roughly 10gb by entering 10000 into the amount.

The next step might be confusing, because we need to change the cd-rom drive that's invariably taking up D: at the moment, because we want to use D: for the Windows XP partition, but it's already taken by the cd-rom drive. If you skip this step than XP will install onto the E: drive, which isn't the end of the world, but it's not quite as tidy.

Right-click on the cd-rom drive in the list and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.

Now we'll change the CD drive to use E: by selecting that in the drop-down.

Now we can create a new partition for XP to live on and make sure that the drive letter is set the way we want. If you do not create a partition now the XP install will do so automatically, but it's easier and cleaner to do it this way.

Right-click on the Unallocated free space area and then select New Simple Volume from the menu.

Follow through the wizard and select whatever options you'd like, making sure to use D: as the drive letter.

Now you will need to close out of disk management and reboot your computer. This is because we can't do the next step until we reboot. (you can try, but it won't work)

So we've come back from rebooting… open up Computer from the start menu and then right-click on the D: drive and select properties. Give your partition a meaningful name like "XP". It would be wise to name the C: drive to "Vista" at this point as well.

Now you'll want to pop your XP cd into the drive and boot off it. You may have to configure your BIOS to enable booting off the CD drive, or if your computer says something like "Hit Esc for boot menu" you might want to use that.

Once you come to the screen where you can choose the partition to install on, then choose either the unpartitioned space or the new partition you created. Whatever you do, don't try and install onto your Vista partition! See how much cleaner it is now that we've labeled each partition distinctly?

We'll assume XP is completely installed at this point, and you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista, so we'll need to use the VistaBootPro utility to restore the Vista boot loader.

Update: VistaBootPro is no longer free, but you can still download the free version.

During the install you'll be forced to install the .NET 2.0 framework. Open up VistaBootPRO and then click on the System Bootloader tab. Check the "Windows Vista Bootloader" and then "All Drives" radio buttons, and then click on the Install Bootloader button.

At this point, the Windows Vista bootloader is installed and you'll only be able to boot into Vista, but we'll fix that. Instead of manually doing the work, we'll just click the Diagnostics menu item and then choose Run Diagnostics from the menu.

This will scan your computer and then automatically fill in the XP version.. click on the "Manage OS Entries" tab and then click in the textbox for Rename OS Entry, and name it something useful like "Windows XP" or "The Windows That Works"

Click the Apply Updates button and then reboot your computer… you should see your shiny new boot manager with both operating systems in the list!

If you get an error saying "unable to find ntldr" when trying to boot XP, you'll need to do the following:

•Find the hidden files ntldr and ntdetect.com in the root of your Vista drive and copy them to the root of your XP drive.
•If you can't find the files there, you can find them in the \i386\ folder on your XP install cd

There's more information on this forum thread, thanks to nrv1013

This is a critical piece of information: Windows XP will be installed on the D: drive, even in Windows XP… so you'll need to keep that in mind when tweaking your system.

You can share information between the drives, but I wouldn't recommend messing with the other operating system's partition too much… it might get angry and bite you. Or screw up your files. What I do recommend is that you store most of your files on a third drive shared between the operating systems… you could call that partition "Data".
